Suspiria Remake Gets R-Rating For Graphic Nudity And Ritualistic Violence

Roughly two months ago, Academy Award nominee Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) premiered the first footage from his reimagining of Dario Argento’s Giallo masterpiece, Suspiria, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The exclusive clip reportedly saw a dancer meticulously “torn apart” in a flourish of “urine, spittle, and blood” and, understandably, had attendees forcibly losing their lunches.

Fast forward to June, after nearly a decade in the making, mind you, and the first trailer for the remake finally arrived. Granted, the sub-two minute advertisement didn’t feature any of the gory grandiosity shown privately earlier in the year, but what it lacked in viscera it made up for with unbearable dread.

Given the macabre content of the CinemaCon clip and overwhelming terror in the preview, this next bit shouldn’t come as a surprise. The MPAA has today bestowed an R-rating upon Suspiria for “disturbing content involving ritualistic violence, bloody images and graphic nudity, and some language including sexual references.” I don’t know about you, but I’ve suddenly got quite the appetite. Anyone else hungry?

Unfortunately, we’ve still a ways to go before Guadagnino’s reworking slithers into theaters on November 2nd. However, it’s entirely possible that Suspiria could see a premiere on the summer film festival circuit, with a screening during the Midnight Madness portion of TIFF 2018 looking more and more likely.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the horror mystery will star Dakota Johnson as ballet student Susie Bannion, who transfers to a prestigious dance academy with a sinister and supernatural history. Written by David Kajganich (The TerrorA Bigger Splash), filling out the cast of Suspiria are Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth and Academy Award-winner Tilda Swinton, and as soon as we hear more about what’s in store for us, we’ll be sure to let you know.
