Yesterday brought news that House of Cards star Ben Daniels had been cast as Lord Snowden in the upcoming third season of The Crownwhich will see Netflix’s royal drama move forward to the next stage of Queen Elizabeth and her family’s lives. The Hollywood Reporter’s revealed that The Crown has found its Princess Anne, the second oldest child and only daughter of the Queen and Prince Phillip. The role will be played by newcomer Erin Doherty. The British actress has just one credit to her name at present, an episode of the BBC’s Call the Midwife, but she’s also set to play a part in a new adaptation of Les Miserables, set to release later this year.

The young Anne was previously portrayed in season 2 by actress Lyla Barrett-Rye and the character’s just one part of a show-wide recasting so as to reflect the passing of time. Most notably, leads Claire Foy and Matt Smith are now gone as the Queen and Phillip and will be replaced by Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies, respectively. Perhaps the biggest name joining the cast for season 3 though is Helena Bonham Carter, who’s taking over from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, Elizabeth’s sister.

Season 3 will mark the planned halfway point for The Crown, as the renewed cast is expected to last for this season and next before the series moves on to the Queen’s autumn years, meaning a recast will be necessitated once again. Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said back in 2016 that the plan was for the show to stretch six decades across six seasons, and we still believe that to be the case.

The Crown season 3 is expected to hit the streaming service in 2019, and once we’ve got an exact date for when it’ll premiere, we’ll be sure to let you know.
