Ant-Man and the Wasp is about to buzz its way into cinemas in the US and even though we haven’t yet seen the sequel, people are already wondering what the future has in store for Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly’s shrinking superheroes. In short, will there by an Ant-Man 3 at some point in Phase Four?
The Hollywood Reporter asked Lilly this very question recently and the actresses admitted that she doesn’t know what Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team are planning behind the scenes. As far she understands it, another movie featuring Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne will depend on how well Ant-Man and the Wasp does at the box office. It’s too early to say for sure then, but Lilly remains hopeful that things will go well enough to ensure that a threequel gets the green light.
“At this point, my understanding is that we need to get butts in the theater seats again if we’re going to have another film. So if everyone gets out and watches it then I would assume we’ll have another one. I hope we’ll have another one, because I really want to do it again, but I don’t know right now.”
Lilly’s response is much the same as other members of the cast and crew that’ve been asked about Ant-Man 3. Her co-star Paul Rudd has explained that he has some ideas of his own for a third film in the series, though stopped short of revealing what they are in case they end up being used in the movie. Director Peyton Reed has also said that he’s waiting on word from Marvel Studios to begin early work on Ant-Man 3. He guesses that an announcement may be made in around a month’s time, but we’ll have to wait and see.
In the meantime, Ant-Man and the Wasp will return in next May’s Avengers 4, when they help Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Captain Marvel defeat Thanos once and for all.
