We’ve seen talking raccoons and sentient trees, but for the MCU’s latest gig, we may be introduced to a strange little cat. And not the kind which sleeps all days and still manages to somehow ruin your favorite pair of shoes, but a feline of alien descent.
We are, of course, referring to Chewie, the fuzzy little companion to Captain Marvel who could be making an appearance during next year’s standalone movie.
Just last week, for instance, we caught wind of Samuel L. Jackson’s fancy Captain Marvel hoody, on which you’ll see a reference to Chewie, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the iconic logo for Carol’s alter-ego – a logo that ought to be enshrined in pop culture after Avengers: Infinity War.
And today, we have more evidence to suggest Captain Marvel has carved out room for Chewie. This past weekend, Brie Larson wrapped production on Marvel’s first female-fronted solo movie and, to mark the occasion, shared a close-up of what appears to be a calendar, on which you’ll see a tiny hand-drawn spaceship being piloted by a cat. Chewie, is that you?
In the comics, Carol’s little feline companion was later revealed to be a member of the Flerken, an alien species known for their powers of teleportation. She eventually wound up in the company of Rocket Raccoon, which would explain why Chewie is pictured here in a little flying saucer. It’s by no means official, of course, so chalk this up as a rumor for now.
Imbued with god-like abilities, Captain Marvel graces theaters on March 8th, 2019, at which point the MCU will have notched its first female-led superhero pic. And at least according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, it’ll be the first of many to come.
