Mortal Kombat Reboot Producer Says Nothing’s Happening With The Film

When it comes to Mortal Kombat on film, those of us who've long loved the franchise have been enduring a dry spell since 1997 - well, that is unless you count the TV and web series that followed. Still, Tinseltown has failed to test its might for 21 years now, so it's high time the ball got rolling.

Having said that, I confess to being thrilled upon seeing character breakdowns for the silver screen reboot hitting the web earlier this week. Sure, they may have left out mainstays such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero, re-imagined Raiden as a teenager, and placed the central focus on a new character named Cole Turner, but the descriptions for all other Kombatants seemed quite accurate to the source material.

Still, with those deviations sticking out like a sore thumb, series purists were less than happy to receive the news. In fact, one reached out to several of those involved with the film’s production on Twitter, and soon received the following response from producer Todd Garner:

“Nothing is happening with the movie at this time, so all news is premature. Sorry!”

Normally, That Hashtag Show has had a good track record with their casting scoops, so this does indeed come as somewhat of a shock. On the one hand, Garner may be dancing around any “premature” announcements, but on the other, hearing that “nothing is happening” sounds like business as usual when it comes to this production. Really, are we ever going to see our favorite fighters on the big screen again?

Mortal Kombat is set to be directed by Simon McQuoid from a screenplay penned by Greg Russo and as soon as we learn more about it, we’ll be sure to let you know.
