Chuku Modu is the latest reported addition to the MCU’s ever-expanding roster of actors, with The Good Doctor star apparently cast in an unknown, secret role for next year’s hotly anticipated Captain Marvel.
While there’s not much we can tell you yet about the part played by Modu – who’s also known for his portrayal of Aggo in Game of Thrones – we do know that he’ll be in pretty good company for Carol Danvers’ big screen debut. Alongside Brie Larson as the title character, we’ll be seeing Jude Law as Doctor Walter Lawson, Gemma Chan as Doctor Minerva, Ben Mendelsohn in possibly another villainous role, and of course, Samuel L. Jackson as a digitally de-aged Nick Fury.
While production has already wrapped on the movie, it may be quite some time before the first trailer sees the light of day, but it’s clear that Marvel’s next release is going to be a major indication of what to expect from the studio’s future. Larson’s character will apparently be taking the lead for Phase 4 of the MCU, though not before she helps bring the current era to a close in Avengers 4.
Furthermore, Marvel president Kevin Feige recently offered a vague tease of the character’s planned impact on the franchise for the next few years, saying:
“I mean, all of the things you’ve seen throughout Phases 1 and 2 and now through much of 3, the new characters always are important going forward in driving, shaping the future of the MCU. I think it would be amazing, another 10 years; another 20 films or so.”
Continuing on, he said:
“We only focus on one step at a time but that’s all about continuing to surprise with the stories, go unexpected places, continue to play with new, fresh, unexpected genres and then introduce characters that people might have heard of or a beloved big fan base like Captain Marvel or characters like Guardians where before we made that, people had never even heard of them.”
On top of all this, with Anna Boden and her regular collaborator Ryan Fleck at the helm, Carol’s debut film will be the first in what’s said to be a long line of Marvel features directed by women, not to mention the first female solo superhero movie in a cinematic universe that may soon have majority female leads.
In short, we have a lot of changes coming our way, and it all starts with the release of Captain Marvel on March 8th, 2019.
