Having already seen a release date fall by the wayside, Warner Bros. announced earlier this year – much to fan vexation, mind you – that Godzilla: King of the Monsters had been pushed back another couple of months, this time to May 31st, 2019. After all, we’ve been through this song and dance before, and the outcome is almost never positive.
Nonetheless, director Michael Dougherty somehow managed to keep the more misanthropic moviegoers at bay recently by teasing the arrival of the three-headed dragon, King Ghidorah. Not to mention EW also debuted the first photos from the sequel a few days back.
Now though, we’ve got something much more meaty to sink our teeth into, as Warner Bros. has formally unveiled the electrifying teaser trailer for King of the Monsters and though it doesn’t show us too much, it’s a wonderful appetizer for what’s to come. Obviously, a lot of the big monster reveals and sure to be epic clashes are being held back (though there are still a few awesome glimpses at the film’s many beasts here), but it appears that round two for the Big G will be another sweeping spectacle with lots for fans to love.
Given the mixed results yielded by the DC Extended Universe’s attempts at world-building, we’re hopeful that the studio’s learned a few lessons when it comes to fleshing out Godzilla’s MonsterVerse in a satisfying manner. Things have certainly been going well so far though, with the 2014 Godzilla and last year’s Kong: Skull Island each doing respectably in terms of both commercial and critical success.
Nonetheless, Dougherty’s upcoming pic is under some considerable pressure for its role as a major stepping stone and potential hype-builder for 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, arguably the first true crossover moment for this still-young universe. As such, it’ll be fascinating to see how Godzilla: King of the Monsters performs when it crashes into theaters next year.
In regards to the aforementioned Godzilla Vs. Kong – directed by Adam Wingard – that one should be with us in May of 2020, barring any unforeseen setback. Which, given the unimaginable magnitude of the former, doesn’t lend Gojira much time to catch his atomic breath.
