Bad Robot’s WWII Horror Movie Overlord Unveils Thrilling First Trailer

Paramount and Bad Robot journey back to WWII with the bizarre first trailer for Overlord, a horror-thriller with zero ties to the Cloververse... we think.

The year is 1994, and Wyatt Russell and Jovan Adepo are heading into the belly of the beast.

Their mission? To infiltrate a Nazi stronghold and help turn the tide of WWII. But everything starts to unravel once our paratroopers uncover supernatural forces designed to thwart the Allied endeavor. Welcome to Overlord, Paramount and Bad Robot’s bonkers horror-thriller that has today unleashed its first trailer – a trailer that really needs to be seen to be believed.

We open on the eve of D-day; American paratroopers are preparing to drop behind enemy lines in a scene that looks like a modern-day version of Band of Brothers. But we’re a ways away from Easy Company, as it isn’t long before Overlord delves into an alternate history teeming with gross and bizarre Nazi experiments. For want of a better comparison, it’s not dissimilar to the Zombies Mode of Call of Duty, in which players mow down waves of the undead during World War II.

Because make no mistake, Overlord comes bearing a hard R-rating for its warped violence and disturbing images, and today’s first-look trailer leaves us with just one question: what on Earth is hiding behind that wall?

Directed by Julius Avery from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) – for the record, J.J. Abrams is listed as a producer, though it’s since been confirmed that Overlord holds no connection to the Cloverfield universe – this bat-shit horror thriller is best described as so:

A group of American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success, but as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.

Also starring Jacob Anderson, Pilou Asbæk, Iain De Caestecker, John Magaro and Bokeem Woodbine of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Overlord is set to debut October 26th.
