Arriving on the eve of San Diego Comic-Con, this subtle snippet doesn’t feature any footage of the titular beast – nor does it offer a glimpse of his monstrous enemies: Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah – but it’s still a pretty effective tease of the city-leveling anarchy yet to come.

We begin with Millie Bobby Brown’s visibly distressed lead, Madison Russell, huddled in what appears to be some form of nuclear bunker. In front of her is a giant, old-fashioned radio, which she uses to send an SOS to Monarch, the fictional organization with a long and spotty history of tracking these MUTOs – Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms.

Alas, she has no luck, and cowers into her chair as the unmistakable sounds of chaos and gunfire drown out her cry for help. Pay close attention and you’ll also hear what appears to be Rodan crippling humanity with its sonic booms.

The bug-eating pterodactyl is just one of three impossibly-sized creatures set to appear during Godzilla: King of the Monsters, given the blockbuster sequel looks set to awaken Mothra and King Ghidorah, too. It certainly makes for an unmissable grudge match, particularly now that director Michael Dougherty has gone on record to warn fans that Rodan, a “winged A-bomb,” is more powerful than Gojira himself. Yikes.

On the ground level, Millie Bobby Brown will be joined by Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance and O’Shea Jackson Jr.

Toho’s most famous creation returns to the big screen next summer thanks to Godzilla: King of the Monsters. After that? A cinematic tussle with a very big – very angry – Kong. And make no mistake, Skull Island’s undisputed king still has some growing to do…
