2018 marks the fourth year that Conan O’Brien has brought his TBS late night talk show to San Diego Comic-Con. Taped at the historic Spreckels Theater, the crimson-haired host will be sitting down with the cast of Glass today and Aquaman Sunday, having already chatted with the cast of Breaking Bad on Wednesday and The Predator stars on Thursday. So make sure you’re tuning in if you haven’t been already.
Never short on a high profile cameo, or topical spoof, Conan may not be as well versed in the superhero arena as his crowd, but O’Brien doesn’t let that get in the way of making an apt observation on the current state of comic book cinema. And so far, this year has been no different.
The late night host kicked-off his first 2018 Comic-Con episode by poking fun at the financial and critical disparity between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, which you can check out below.
In the skit, which envisions every superhero attending a high school together, the Caped Crusader (O’Brien), frustrated with the lameness of his supergroup, attempts to sit with the Avengers (Riki Lindhome as Black Widow, Keegan-Michael Key as Black Panther, Rob Huebel as Iron Man and David Koechner as Thor), to hilarious results.
Given the catastrophic failure that was – and I suppose still is – Justice League, and the fact the MCU recently surpassed $17 billion at the worldwide box office, it’s easy to see why the coolest member of DC’s supergroup is eager to get in on the action. Nonetheless, seeing as DC and WB are expected to light up Hall H later today, the much-maligned shared superhero universe may get the last laugh out of SDCC.
