Venom Director Says There Are No Heroes In The Movie

Along with Wonder Woman 1984, Ruben Fleischer’s Venom is one of the few San Diego Comic-Con participants who didn't make what was screened within the confines of Hall H immediately available for public consumption. Which, considering the footage shown, is quite unfortunate, as it saw the sinister symbiote literally bite the head off of an insignificant baddie.

Thankfully, then, a Twitter account associated with the forthcoming feature has disclosed when, exactly, we can expect to see the new Venom trailer, and it’s a lot sooner than you might think (this week). In the meantime, though, we’re still reeling from the highlight of Sony Pictures’ panel, during which, Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed and Ruben Fleischer spilled many a secret regarding their antagonistic feature. And as the new week began, despite the fact that the “largest convention of its kind in the world” had concluded, publicity for Venom continued to pour in.

Case in point: Entertainment Weekly recently sat down with Fleischer, who discussed the film’s tone and how the “darker, more violent, more menacing” attributes of Eddie Brock will set it apart “from a lot of the other superhero movies.”

”I was really excited about just bringing something new to the genre. I feel like the tone of our movie is really original and distinctive, which is totally appropriate for the character, as Venom is a darker, more violent, more menacing character. I think our movie feels distinctive from a lot of the other superhero movies, in part because there’s no real hero in it.”

Venom does appear to have doubled down on the unheroic qualities of its titular character. After all, nothing screams “I’m not a hero” better than decapitating a human being with your symbiotic mouth. Just in case you didn’t get the message, though, the film’s tagline, ”embrace your inner antihero” – present in the trailer above, too – should’ve really hammered the point home.

Should you still find yourself a bit iffy on the trajectory of Venom though, fear not, as Fleischer believes Tom Hardy’s performance will blow people away.

“So it’s just a movie that kind of stands on its own, led by incredible performances by fine actors such as [Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed]. But Tom really just is — I think people are going to be blown away by what he brings to the table with both Eddie Brock and Venom. His performance is incredible, and sets the bar for the film.”

Based on the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes comic book series, look for Venom – starring Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson – to invade your local multiplex on October 5th.
