Make no mistake about it, Venom has got people talking, and rightfully so. After all, it’s not every day that such an iconic antagonist like Eddie Brock is awarded their very own movie, but with Peter Parker busy mixing it up with the Mad Titan, Sony opted to plant the symbiotic seed rather than field it out. And even though it’s only scheduled to invade your local multiplex on October 5th later this year, director Ruben Fleischer is already facing the “sequel” question.
In case you missed it, the Sony Pictures tentpole took part in San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend and outside of Hall H, ComicBook.com caught up with Fleischer and posed the query on everyone’s mind, specifically: “are you looking at an overarching story?”
“We’ve definitely laid some groundwork for different directions that the franchise could go,” said Fleischer, “but obviously it all hinges on people’s excitement about this film. I hope people will stay and see what seeds have been planted.”
I don’t know about you, but that last remark sounds a lot like the director’s alluding to a post-credits scene. Regardless, judging from what we’ve seen thus far from the sinister symbiote, people are plenty excited about the forthcoming release, and Sony looks to have a Homecoming-sized hit on their hands here. It’s too early to say for sure just yet, but the pic will more than likely be getting a sequel or two as it looks to expand the studio’s Spidey-less Spider-Man universe.
Venom slithers into theaters on October 5th, when Eddie Brock’s down-on-his-luck reporter will be opening a case to monitor Dr. Carlton Drake, the billionaire genius behind the Life Foundation. And it’s there where he encounters a goopy symbiote not of this world…
