Let it be said that Dave Bautista, portrayer of Drax the Destroyer in the MCU (and all around awesome guy), is an absolute legend.
For those of you who don’t know (and if you don’t, where have you been?), Disney shocked the internet last week by firing James Gunn after disturbing social media comments made way back in 2011 resurfaced. The filmmaker had come under fire recently when Tweets referencing pedophilia and molestation came to light, and it grew to the point where it was problematic enough that Disney felt some action needed to be taken.
Following his justifiable termination or unnecessary dismissal, depending on who you ask, Bautista immediately leapt to defend his colleague, calling Gunn “one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met.” A few days later, he returned to social media again, admonishing Disney for caving to the demands of alt-right media personality Mike Cernovich. And as if that wasn’t enough, he blasted the studio yet again the other day. But Dave’s not done yet. Oh no, he’s just getting started.
Hopping on Twitter once more, the actor – who, quite frankly, might be out of a job soon when it comes to his role in the MCU – fueled the fire a little further by posting the below message. It doesn’t reference anyone by name, but it’s beyond clear that he’s making fun of Disney here for what they did to Gunn.
I think today I’ll find a good person who spreads the message of …Equality.Unity.Sacrifice.Responsibility.Love.Family .Forgiveness.Redemption. Misfit,Child,Female Empowerment and ruin his life. Though Bautista’s been extremely vocal about the firing almost ever since it happened, his Guardians of the Galaxy co-stars have been relatively coy about sharing their thoughts on the matter, though Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff have each posted Tweets that indirectly allude to the news while suggesting sympathy for Gunn.
As for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a 2020 release is still planned as far as we know, but it’s clear that however things turn out for the project, the sequel will be coming to us on a wave of controversy.
