Despite the good doctor’s demise during the cataclysmic finale of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige disclosed last month that Doctor Strange 2 will indeed happen, at some point.
Unfortunately, the reason for the delay regarding another standalone film for the Sorcerer Supreme is unknown, and somewhat peculiar, come to think of it, seeing as the Marvel Cinematic Universe does tend to dwell inside a two-to-three year interval for any given sequel.
Regardless, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson – who’s yet to be invited back for the follow-up, mind you – took to Instagram earlier today and seemingly teased that an announcement apropos of the sequel might be imminent. In a cryptic message, he posted the below comic book panel of Stephen Strange, captioned with: “‘Not my will, but thine be done…’ See you in September.”
As previously stated, Derrickson has yet to be invited back for Doctor Strange 2, so it’s possible the native of Denver, Colorado could be alluding to his impending return, or that the picture will soon be entering pre-production. That said, taking into consideration that Marvel’s only confirmed Spider-Man: Far From Home and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 post-Phase Three, pre-production is a bit of a stretch, so an announcement corroborating Feige’s statement does seem much more likely.
Nonetheless, a return appears to be written in the stars. After all, Marvel does have a history of bringing back successful creative teams, and Doctor Strange was obviously a big hit, earning $677 million worldwide and the certified fresh approval on Rotten Tomatoes. As such, we believe it’s only a matter of time now before the wheels start turning on the sequel and once we hear something more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
