It’s sounding as if The Flash might finally be off the starting blocks.
After the fallout from Justice League, DC and Warner Bros. went back to the drawing board on their DCEU project, with one major consequence being that the Flash movie was completely retooled. The original plan was for the film to adapt Geoff Johns’ Flashpoint comic book arc, in which we travel to an alternate DC universe where everything’s backwards (Thomas Wayne is Batman, Superman’s a lab rat in a government base, a war between Aquaman and Wonder Woman has destroyed Europe, etc.). In the comics, this was used as a mini-crisis to reset continuity, and many assumed that Warner Bros. could use it to do the same thing.
However, with universe-spanning crossovers apparently off the menu in Worlds of DC, that’s now been ditched in favor of a script by Joby Harold and direction from Spider-Man: Homecoming writers John Frances Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, with everyone assuming Ezra Miller will be getting back into costume as the Fastest Man Alive. Now, we’re hearing that filming will begin next February in Atlanta, which means we should be getting some concrete updates soon.
Hiring the Homecoming writers to direct here gives us a pretty clear indication of the tone Warner Bros. will be hoping for with The Flash. I’d predict a heavily Spider-Man-esque story about Barry Allen trying his best to juggle both his personal and superhero life, finding out that even super speed means you can’t be in two places at once.
Filling out the supporting cast for the pic are Kiersey Clemons as Iris West and Billy Crudup as Barry’s incarcerated father (whose scenes were one of the best bits of Justice League, in my opinion). Though The Flash doesn’t yet have a release date, shooting in February 2019 hints at a spring 2020 release and as always, we’ll let you know as soon as we hear more.
