Kevin Spacey’s New Movie Only Made $126 On Opening Day

When Kevin Spacey became embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of the #MeToo movement last year, with the actor facing numerous sexual harassment charges, many wondered if the career of the Hollywood icon was over. This certainly seemed to be the case when Ridley Scott reshot All the Money in the World at great expense to remove Spacey and replace him with Christopher Plummer.

This certainly seemed to be the case when Ridley Scott reshot All the Money in the World at great expense to remove Spacey and replace him with Christopher Plummer.

It was surprising, then, when Billionaire Boys Club was released with Spacey’s role in tact. Vertical Entertainment had previously stated that they hoped that the strong work of the ensemble cast – starring young talent such as Taron Egerton, Ansel Engort, Emma Roberts and Jeremy Irvine – would be enough to ensure Spacey’s part in the crime drama based on a true story would not affect it too much.

Well, it seems their prediction was wrong. In an all-time low for the actor’s career, Billionaire Boys Club grossed just $126 on its opening day. The film had previously been made available on VOD last month and only garnered a very limited theatrical release in a just handful of locations, but this is still a paltry amount even within those constrictions. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter did the math and calculated that this means only six people were in the audience for each showing.

Actor Kevin Spacey arrives at the 86th Academy Awards in Hollywood

For a demonstration of just how far Spacey’s reputation has fallen, the last time he appeared in a movie with Ansel Engort was last year’s Baby Driver. The Edgar Wright-directed pic was a critical smash and made $226 million worldwide on the back of a $34 million budget. Its opening day take, meanwhile, was a cool $6 million. Now, Spacey’s name can hardly muster over $100 in a night.

Billionaire Boys Club is the last project for Kevin Spacey on the horizon, seeing as he’s been removed from season 6 of Netflix’s House of Cards and his Gore Vidal biopic, Gore has been pulled from release. Going by the serious allegations against the actor, and this film’s embarrassingly weak performance, it’s probably safe to say that he won’t be acquiring any new jobs in the near future.
