Rian Johnson’s New Star Wars Trilogy Rumored To Be In Trouble

YouTube tipster Mike Zeroh is claiming that Rian Johnson's newfangled Star Wars trilogy is in trouble and may well be outright cancelled.

With $1.3 billion and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91 percent to its name, it’s fair to say that Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a resounding success – even if it failed to hit the dizzying heights of The Force Awakens ($2 billion).

That said, Rian Johnson’s Star Wars sequel proved contentious among some circles, where it was raked over the coals for its approach to big-name characters like Luke Skywalker and even Supreme Leader Snoke.

All of this is once again dredged up for Mike Zeroh’s latest video, in which the YouTube tipster goes so far as to claim that Rian Johnson’s newfangled trilogy may be in trouble (or outright canceled) due to the backlash. Zeroh also lumps Solo‘s middling box office performance into the equation, which forced Lucasfilm to rethink its approach to standalone Star Wars movies like those in development for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett.

Frankly, it’s a stretch, and this isn’t the first time that people have tried to conflate the disappointing performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story with the small (yet incredibly vocal) backlash against The Last Jedi.

But let’s hear out Zeroh’s perspective nonetheless:

We really don’t know what’s going on what’s going on with Rian Johnson’s involvement. The original concept and idea behind his trilogy seems [to have been] put in the trash right now, where it’s riding on a blank canvas – three movies, one story. But it seems Rian Johnson will get at least one movie which is either a spinoff or an open-ended film that may well warrant another two sequels from Lucasfilm.

So perhaps the Powers That Be are hedging their bets with Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy and only committing to a single movie for the time being? It’s possible, if a little unlikely. Regardless, next up for the Lucasfilm juggernaut is the arrival of Episode IX on December 20th, 2019.
