Karl Urban Says Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek Idea Is Bananas

Though Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek could still be 5 or 6 years away, you can already tell that this one's going to divide the fanbase. While J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin’s takes on the sci-fi property certainly drew flak from franchise purists for diverging from the spirit of the shows, neither director seems as committed to bringing their own personal style to every one of their projects as Tarantino, and there’s no reason to think that the provocative auteur’s R-rated franchise debut will be any different.

While the filmmaker is currently hard at work on the significantly more controversial Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Karl Urban already has some idea of what to expect from the eventual space drama, and from the sound of things, Tarantino remains ever the eccentric.

Speaking at the Trekonderoga convention, the actor known for playing Doctor ‘Bones’ McCoy had this to report:

“Quentin Tarantino went in to [producer] J.J. [Abrams]’s offices and pitched him an idea for a Star Trek movie. I know a little bit about what that is, and it’s bananas. So, they are writing that as well. He is currently making a film with Brad Pitt and and [Leonardo] DiCaprio [Once Upon a Time in Hollywood]. So, it is going to be a year away from finishing that. So, it would be really rad to get to make a film with him. That would be a dream come true, he is definitely an auteur. Whether you like his films or not, he is a good filmmaker. And he makes interesting stuff. So, to me, that is when you get the best results.”

So far so Tarantino. While this R-rated Star Trek may well have a few familiar faces from the Abrams era of the series, including Karl Urban and John Cho, it’s safe to say that this is going to be a wilder, stranger and presumably more gruesome affair than anything the franchise has brought us in recent years. Here’s hoping Urban knows what he was talking about when he said that this is just the kind of shake-up that the property needs.
