Carrie on forever.

Those three words ought to be familiar to anyone who follows Mark Hamill on social media, where the Star Wars mainstay tends to commemorate his on-screen sister and her undying legacy.

It’s one that has clearly inspired the creation of Star Wars: Episode IX, too, after director J.J. Abrams tweeted out a heartfelt message in memory of Carrie Fisher to mark the start of production. Now, four weeks later, Oscar Isaac has spoken out about Fisher and the ways in which her General Leia Organa will be handled during next year’s blockbuster. In short, Abrams plans to incorporate a mix of CGI and unused footage when dealing with Leia.

Meanwhile, when asked straight-up about Fisher, Isaac told USA Today that she’s still very much part of the Star Wars DNA.

Of course she’s with us.

Behind the lens, we know J.J. Abrams is returning to close out the trilogy he helped launch with The Force Awakens in 2005, and according to Isaac, he’s just as excited as you and I.

It seems to me just as excited if not more so because now there’s a history there, there’s a shorthand, and the nature of the story is different.

Such a conclusive finale means Abrams will purportedly pull from all Star Wars eras – prequels included – as he sets about bringing the curtain down on the Skywalker Saga. But make no mistake, as Oscar Isaac tells USA Today, the Resistance are still on the back foot following The Last Jedi.

The Resistance are guerrilla fighters, adhering closer to something like the Revolutionary War fighters or even the guerrillas in Cuba with Che and Fidel and all these guys living in the mountains, coming down to do some attacks, and going back and trying to hide from the ’empire’ of the United States. It’s that kind of ragged at this point. You hear about stories with [George] Washington as a general, where lots of people died based on their orders. but that is part of leadership and that push-and-pull in the fight for figuring out what’s the way to move forward.

Look for Star Wars: Episode IX to break new ground for this most beloved franchise on December 20th, 2019.
