With the addition of the Best Popular Film category, AMPAS has (reluctantly) welcomed the ever-expanding realm of comic book cinema into award season, and while this year offered no shortage of worthy nominees – such as Black Panther, Incredibles 2 and Avengers: Infinity War – 2019 will be an entirely different ballgame.
At the worldwide box office in 2018 – thus far – some variant of superhuman has dominated the ticket booth an astonishing thirty-three percent of the time – whether it be Ant-Man and the Wasp ($595M), Deadpool 2 ($734M), Incredibles 2 ($1.16B), Black Panther ($1.34B), or Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04B).
Unfortunately, even with the addition of Venom (Oct 5th), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Dec 14th), and Aquaman (Dec 21st), 2018 will still pale in comparison to what 2019 has in store for us, speaking strictly from an aggregative perspective.
According to Screen Rant, a total of ten live-action superhero-driven films are currently set for release in 2019, and each and every one of them will be vying to take home the Oscar for “outstanding achievement” in blockbuster and genre cinema next year.
Should each motion picture adhere to their scheduled street date, they’ll be released in the following order:
Hellboy (Jan 11th)
Glass (Jan 18th)
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Feb 14th)
Captain Marvel (March 8th)
Shazam! (April 5th)
Avengers 4 (May 3rd)
Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 6th)
New Mutants (Aug 2nd)
Joker (Oct 14th)
Wonder Woman 1984 (Nov 1st)
However, it should be noted there very well could be an eleventh film added to the mix: Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. At the moment, the Blumhouse-backed picture is without a release date but was scheduled to enter principal photography in February earlier this year. And, if the Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner-led project is able to kick-off production soon, it’s plausible Spawn could see a release in 2019.
