Today’s announcement that Henry Cavill has been cast as Geralt of Rivia, the hero of Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series was greeted with surprise and excitement by fans of the books and games and trepidation by those looking forward to Man of Steel 2.
The last few weeks have seen intense contract negotiations between Cavill’s team and Warner Bros., with both sides apparently failing to reach an agreement on a further multi-movie deal for him to continue playing the Man of Steel. Add to that the fact that he’s picking up Geralt of Rivia’s twin blades for what’s sure to be a lengthy shoot and you might think his days in the cape are numbered.
Well, Mario-Francisco Robles over at Revenge of the Fans has explained why we shouldn’t write off Cavill’s involvement in the Worlds of DC franchise quite yet. He points out that while the actor’s expected to be working on The Witcher from November to May, that might not actually interfere with Warner Bros.’ current slate of DC movies. He says that whatever the circumstances, Man of Steel 2 was only ever going to film in late 2019, and that Joker, Birds of Prey, The Flash and The Batman aren’t titles that mandate Superman appearing in them.
Robles also explains that Cavill’s manager, Dany Garcia, is an expert at juggling her clients’ film and TV appearances. Just look at Dwayne Johnson’s (who she also works with) insanely busy movie schedule, which somehow manages to squeeze in seasons of HBO’s Ballers, too.
And so, while Cavill signing on for such a high profile and time consuming role certainly isn’t good news for him returning as the Man of Steel, it’s hardly the kiss of death that you might assume it to be at first glance.
