Put this Ant-Man story under the, “wow, those guys at Marvel sure can do anything at all no matter how silly the source material” category. Also, if you like DC, file it in the “oh my god this writer is so biased and probably being paid by Kevin Feige nonsense” cabinet.
According to a recent report from Latino Review spinoff website Heroic Hollywood, Ant-Man and The Wasp has pushed revenue for the MCU’s sub-franchise about a divorced dad and his sugar loving insect friends to more than $1 billion. Citing data from industry site Box Office Mojo, writer Jay Barrett noted the film’s earned more than $600 million worldwide alongside Ant-Man’s $500 million.
While each movie cost more than $100 million to make (and theater owners and marketing take up a significant portion of financial figures for themselves), the results here represent something of a vindication for the House of Ideas, which was formerly entirely ran by Trump supporter Ike Perlmutter.
Sites like the UK-based Daily Express wrote up articles expressing worry at Ant-Man and The Wasp’s initial opening release numbers and stated concern for its chances of success, but, once more, Marvel pulled through. Like the Guardians of the Galaxy, what was predicted to flop actually reached new heights of success and forged a dedicated link with a wide section of the population, both in the United States and around the world.
Yes, both Ant-Man and The Wasp have their faults, and yes, Marvel is not without their issues as a business, but what they’re doing seems to be impervious to shifting moods or market conditions for the time being.
Indeed, Barrett said it best in his original report:
“Bring your short jokes, take whatever jabs you want at the shrinking gimmick, but stop and think – has your film franchise earned billion dollars?”
