Blumhouse Chief Still Wants To Resurrect Scream

Per Forbes, Jason Blum has once again reaffirmed that he'd like to resurrect the dormant Scream franchise much like he did with Halloween.

Remember when Jason Blum went on record about possibly reviving other dormant horror franchises beyond Halloween?

Friday the 13th sprung to mind as an early contender, though legal issues continue to plague the celebrated IP. So what about Scream? Turns out Blum is more than willing to inject some fresh blood into the long-running series – it’s merely a case of leasing the film rights in order to bring Ghostface back to the big screen.

It’s not that simple, of course, and that’s something the Blumhouse chief addressed while discussing the soon-to-be-released Halloween sequel with Forbes. The outlet presented Jason Blum with two horror properties for his consideration: Scream, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

I’d like to do that, yeah. I would like to do both of them, but it’s a rights situation with all those movies. It’s very tangled and very complicated. It’s one thing to say you want to do them and it’s a whole other thing to get to actually do it. To give you some idea, Halloween was in the works with us for four or five years before it evolved, so, there are business obstacles to cross but, in theory, if you said to me, ‘Would you like to do a Scream movie?’ My answer would be, ‘Of course.’ Sadly it doesn’t work like that.

Scream

There are still many more obstacles to overcome before a Blumhouse-backed Scream movie becomes a reality, then, but you certainly can’t fault Jason Blum’s enthusiasm to bring Ghostface back to the fold – particularly now that age-old horror icons like Michael Myers/The Shape are enjoying a new lease of life.

Speaking of which, Halloween has garnered strong praise ahead of its arrival next month, and there’s even been talk of a potential sequel(s) flickering into life under the watchful eye of David Gordon Green and co-writers Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley. As always, watch this space for more.
