Though Dan Stevens recently made an impact on the big screen with Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast – a lucrative reimagining of the fairytale classic that ended up being a box office juggernaut – the actor’s next project couldn’t be more different.

It’s called Apostle, and comes to us from Welsh director Gareth Evans. If that name sounds familiar, it should. After all, Evans is the creative genius behind hardboiled action thriller The Raid and its divisive sequel, and after flirting with the possibility of potentially closing out the trilogy, he instead switched gears and decided to make this upcoming thriller, which is headed to Netflix next month and just premiered its first trailer today.

Seen up above, it’s a gritty, bloody and wholly disturbing tease of what’s to come, and quite frankly, looks like one hell of a ride. From what we understand, Stevens is signed on to play Thomas Richardson, a lone protagonist who wanders onto a remote island in search of his missing sister. Upon stepping foot on the primordial outcrop, he comes across a volatile religious cult who “will regret the day it baited this man.” Cue the fireworks and batshit insane descent into madness.

Basically, this looks like a Gareth Evans horror movie, packed with visceral action, gruesome violence and a supporting cast that boasts Michael Sheen, Lucy Boynton, Mark Lewis Jones, Bill Milner, Kristine Froseth, and Paul Higgins. It’s an impressive roster, to be sure, and from what we can see with this first trailer, Apostle appears to be a perfect treat for genre fans that should both shock and thrill in equal measure when it hits the streaming service on October 12th.
