In a time where major Hollywood studios are often very stingy when it comes to dishing out the details of their biggest franchise films, there’s something fairly refreshing about the steady stream of pics and videos we’ve been seeing from the upcoming Joker movie lately.
Though the Todd Phillips-helmed film is still over a year away from reaching cinemas, one of the project’s biggest reveals has already slipped out – that is, the sight of Joaquin Phoenix in full Joker makeup. While the recent teaser offered only a quick look at Arthur Fleck’s smiling, painted face, we’ve since seen a video of the iconic villain casually strolling out of a subway train while his fellow passengers flee in panic.
What’s more, we also got a few photos of Zazie Beetz on set earlier today, which gave us a glimpse of her mysterious character who’s apparently named Sophie Drummond, “a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet.” And now, to capitalize on that, Phillips has shared our first official look at the actress in the role, which you can see in the gallery down below along with those aforementioned set pics.
Unfortunately, the director didn’t divulge any details on who she’s playing and the information above is still unconfirmed by the studio. That being said, it’s widely assumed that Beetz’s character will be a love interest for Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, the man who’ll go on to become the Clown Prince of Crime. She’s said to have a pretty sizable role, too, so fans of the Deadpool 2 star have much to look forward to here.
As a work existing separately from the DCEU, where Jared Leto is still the Clown Prince of Crime, Joker‘s being pitched as a different kind of comic book flick, with Phoenix claiming earlier this year that the film can’t be fit neatly into any one genre. As such, it’ll be interesting to see if it manages to find itself classified as a winner when it laughs its way into theaters on October 4th, 2019.
Until then, let’s put a smile on that face, shall we?
