Dark Phoenix Shows Off Its Cosmic Roots With Beautiful New Poster

After weeks – nay, months – spent in absolute silence, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is finally ready to spread its wings.

The first full trailer will be with us later tonight, by which point we should have a pretty clear understanding of Simon Kinberg’s cosmic epic and the direction in which Dark Phoenix is headed.

Providing it stays true to Chris Claremont’s titular comic, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will tell the story of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as she encounters the famous Phoenix Force, ultimately resulting in a radical transformation for the all-powerful mutant. Those same alterations are enough to place her fellow X-Men – namely Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) on red alert, as evidenced by this morning’s ominous teaser.

And now, we have the suitably stellar first poster for you to peruse, which places Sophie Turner’s protagonist against a sea of stars.

The movie’s official logline basically confirms that internal struggle, too, revealing that things begin to unravel for Jean Grey after a rescue mission goes sideways, leaving her at the mercy of a “mysterious cosmic force.”

Word is Jessica Chastain’s mystery character (villain?) is in some way tied to Jean’s downfall, so it’ll be interesting to watch how things pan out when the lights go down early next year. But for now, here’s the 411 on Dark Phoenix:

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling our of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite – not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
