The Avengers will always be remembered as a special Marvel movie.

It was, after all, the first comic book movie of its generation to unite Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, albeit with one or two internal conflicts along the way. Hey, it wouldn’t be the Avengers if they didn’t butt heads every once in a while.

Fast forward to now, though, and the MCU is practically unrecognizable as we stand on the precipice of Phase 4, eagerly awaiting the back-to-back launch of Captain Marvel and the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4. Both Marvel movies are due to arrive next year, but for his latest post, esteemed concept artist Charlie Wen has shared his early Captain America design that was considered in the lead-up to The Avengers, before fellow Marvel wizard Ryan Meinerding came in and finished the job.

Continuing the Avengers posts, here’s a variation of my Captain America design for the film. Joss Whedon asked for a more superhero design compared to the WWII costume seen in Cap:the First Avenger. [Ryan Meinerding] did the awesome final design.

It’s much more modern and refined than the one we saw during Joss Whedon’s Avengers, which favored a classic costume for Steve Rogers’ man out of time. The character would later get an upgraded suit for The Winter Soldier, before reuniting with his fellow Avengers for Age of Ultron.

And now, Captain America is one of the few people who fought in Avengers: Infinity War and lived to tell the tale. His arc was pretty small compared to his fellow heroes, but rest assured, Cap will be making up for lost time once Avengers 4 steamrolls into theaters next summer. Hold onto your butts.
