After premiering at last month’s Fantastic Fest, loopy-looking horror-thriller Overlord has garnered a strong critical response that this latest trailer makes full use of, proudly displaying the film’s 93% Rotten Tomatoes score amidst a series of encouraging quotes.
Aside from such plaudits, the trailer offers much of the same WWII madness that you saw in the first promo, though with a little more emphasis on the film’s horror leanings. While the last trailer saw the undead action unfold over a rocking AC/DC soundtrack that made fighting off the undead feel like a fun night out, this one seems more keen to convey the claustrophobic panic of the characters and the twisted nature of the Nazi experiments they’re investigating. Of course, with a premise this off-the-wall, it’s best assumed that Overlord has no intention of taking itself too seriously.
The synopsis for this insane new film reads as follows:
A group of American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success, but as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.
With J.J. Abrams as producer, the movie was previously thought to be the fourth installment in the Cloverfield universe before the Bad Robot Productions chairman clarified otherwise a few months ago. The film is written by Mark L. Smith – known for his work on a drastically different period drama named The Revenant – along with Captain Phillips scribe Billy Ray. On directing duties is Julius Avery, who previously brought us the 2014 Ewan McGregor crime film Son of a Gun.
The pic bears a hard R-rating, so you can expect Overlord to bring plenty of gleefully gruesome sights to your eyeballs when it lands in cinemas on November 9th.
