The Marvel fanbase has been in a bit of a funk lately, as Chris Evans took to Twitter the other week to tell us that his reshoots had wrapped for the upcoming Avengers 4, essentially bringing the actor’s eight-year run as Captain America to a close.
Fans responded with an outpouring of affection, commemorating the MCU star for his contributions to the Marvel saga with the trending hashtag #ThankYouChrisEvans. And while we all initially took Evans’ tweet to mean that Cap would be meeting his maker in the upcoming Infinity War sequel, it seems that’s not necessarily the case.
Speaking at ACE Comic Con in Chicago over the weekend, the actor explained to the crowd that he wasn’t hinting at Steve Rogers’ death with his Tweet.
“I should clarify that,” said Evans. “I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler, and I should clarify that, regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would’ve tweeted the exact same thing.”
While this does raise the possibility that Cap will have a continuing place in the MCU beyond the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, it’s unlikely that what Evans says here will do too much to dissuade the popular predictions that his beloved hero only has one movie left. I mean, it’s no secret that of all the characters predicted to die in the film, Rogers is right at the top of the list.
In the words of the actor himself, the upcoming Avengers 4 will serve as a “culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies,” implying that it could well act as a passing of the torch to the next generation of heroes. With that in mind, many fans have predicted exits – fatal or otherwise – for not just Evans but his Marvel Phase 1 co-stars Chris Hemsworth and especially Robert Downey Jr., with Tony Stark already suffering many a hypothetical death in the artwork and theories of online forums.
For now, though, this all remains as speculation. Until, of course, we get some concrete answers once Avengers 4 finally arrives on May 3rd, 2019.
