Karl Urban has an impressive number of major franchise outings under his belt, from The Lord of the Rings movies to Star Trek to last year’s Thor: Ragnarok, but there’s at least one more popular property that he’d be keen to get involved in.
Speaking at the recent Dallas Fan Days, the actor suggested that he’d be more than open to entering the comically meta world of the Deadpool movies.
“Yes, I will,” Urban said. “I’d love to be in a Deadpool movie. I’ve seen Julian Dennison [who’s from] New Zealand was in Deadpool 2. I love Deadpool and I certainly, when I watched the first one I saw that there were similarities, particularly in the opening sequence, that reminded me a lot of, and I think they drew some inspiration from, Dredd, at least cinematographically the way Dredd was shot. Sorry. Dredd was a little bit before it’s time in terms of being an “R” rated comic book movie.”
Of course, calling Dredd ahead of its time may not be a stretch, seeing how the film fared poorly at the box office before building up a cult following. Urban is even in talks to potentially reprise the title role for the upcoming TV series Judge Dredd: Mega City One.
Anyway, going back to Wade Wilson’s R-rated series, it sounds like the actor’s a pretty big fan:
“I thought Deadpool was fantastic and Ryan Reynolds is just a beast. Yeah. He did such a good job on that.”
If Urban’s serious about having a part in these movies, then the clock might be ticking on this idea. In the years after the Disney-Fox merger, you can expect to see big changes in the X-Men franchise and its various spinoffs, and while it seems more likely than not that Deadpool’s X-Force flick will survive the transition, what happens beyond that remains a mystery. Moreover, if Marvel Studios end up bringing the Merc with a Mouth into the MCU, then that arguably kills Urban’s dream, since the actor already played a prominent character in this cinematic universe who died in Ragnarok.
In any case, regardless of what the future holds for Deadpool beyond 2018, you’ll be able to see the antihero in PG-13 form when The Deadpool Before Christmas comes out on December 21st.
