Doctor Who: Is Yaz Secretly In Love With The Doctor?

We're four weeks into the eleventh season of Doctor Who and we've already got to know the Thirteenth Doctor and her trio of friends Ryan, Yaz and Graham pretty well. However, it still feels like we've yet to really dive into who Yaz is as a person. The latest episode, "Arachnids in the U.K.", introduced her family but it seems like we still don't know what's really going on in her head. However, it's possible that the last episode contained a hint at a big personal revelation for the character that's coming later down the line this season.

When Yaz’s mother Najia Khan interrogates her daughter over her relationship with the Doctor, she asks whether they’re seeing each other. The Doctor’s confused about the meaning of the question but Yaz scoffs at the idea and changes the subject. Then, at the end of the episode, her and the boys decide to keep on traveling in the TARDIS and Yaz gives the most impassioned speech for her reasons why. She says that she wants to spend more time with the Doctor as she’s “the best person I’ve ever met.”

These two moments have got fans wondering if Yaz is secretly falling in love with the Doctor. Obviously, the Time Lord’s an incredible person and all her friends love her in a sense, but it’s possible that Yaz will fall into that category of companions who want something more than friendship with the Doc. If this is the case, it’ll be interesting to see whether Yaz turns out to be a Martha Jones – who had an unrequited crush on the Doctor – or a Rose Tyler – who the Doctor loved back.

Exec producer Matt Strevens has certainly implied that there would be at least one LGBT character among the main cast of season 11. “I’m not going to say if any of our characters are or are not at this point,” he previously told Digital Spy. “But it is part, I think, of the DNA that [ex-showrunner] Russell [T. Davies] re-imbued into the show…There will be characters from across the spectrum.”

Right now, it’s looking that he may have been alluding to Yaz’s growing feelings for the Doctor, unless we’re reading into something that’s not there. What do you think, though? Is this the direction that Doctor Who is headed in? As always, you can sound off down below.
