New Captain Marvel Photo Might’ve Given Away The Year The Film Is Set In

When actress Brie Larson took to social media yesterday with an image from next year’s Captain Marvel, she did so with the intention of encouraging her followers to vote in the midterm elections, but that doesn’t mean the fans can’t also comb this photo for clues of what to expect from the next MCU instalment.

It’s evident that Larson chose this particular still because of the “Rock the Vote” posters lining the walls on either side of Carol Danvers. What’s interesting about this inclusion from a Marvel fan perspective, however, is that this MTV-led campaign was set up in anticipation of the 1992 election, which considerably narrows down the period over which this Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-helmed film could be set.

But to get even more precise, the posters at the bottom of the image are promoting a concert on Thursday, August 29th. Since the only two years in the 1990s where this particular date was a Thursday are 1991 and 1996, it stands to reason that the movie is set in 1991.

Granted, it’s possible that these concert posters are a few months old, meaning that the film actually takes place in 1992, but in all likelihood, we’re looking at a feature that unfolds in the year of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Terminator 2. In any case, this find has led some fans to suggest that the upcoming flick could somehow reference another MCU event of 1991, namely the deaths of Howard and Maria Stark at the hands of a brainwashed Bucky Barnes. And while Carol is likely to have her hands a little too full fighting Skrulls to get involved in such Hydra-related matters, it’s certainly seems plausible that the movie will at least contain a passing nod to these celebrity deaths.

In any case, seeing how the first Captain Marvel trailer opened with our hero falling into a Blockbuster, you can expect a few more early-‘90s nods to be on the cards when the film hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
