In what’s sure to be one of the biggest TV events of next year, the eight and final season of Game of Thrones will be having its long-awaited premiere in April 2019, with the show’s official Twitter account announcing as such in a brand new trailer.
This latest promo may not offer anything in the way of fresh footage, but it should do its job of getting the blood pumping for one last round of death and betrayal in the land of Westeros. The tweet came with the following text that teases how it’s all been leading up to this final stretch:
“Every battle.
Every betrayal.
Every risk.
Every fight.
Every sacrifice.
Every death.
All #ForTheThrone”
While fans will probably be spending these next few months losing sleep over how it’s all going to end, an EW article from a couple of weeks ago did offer a few clues for how this last batch of episodes is going to start off, and how things could play out from there:
“Season 8 opens at Winterfell with an episode that contains plenty of callbacks to the show’s pilot. Instead of King Robert’s procession arriving, it’s Daenerys and her army. What follows is a thrilling and tense intermingling of characters — some of whom have never previously met, many who have messy histories — as they all prepare to face the inevitable invasion of the Army of the Dead.”
In this same report, we also heard testimonies from the likes of cast members Kit Harington and Sophie Turner that the finale was an emotionally devastating experience for the team, while Emilia Clarke said she “completely flipped out” after reading the script. If this is how they’re feeling, then just imagine the chaos that’s going to unfold when the fans see what all the fuss is about.
We’re already getting a few ideas of how this franchise might continue beyond these final episodes — including a potential Targaryen-themed prequel — but it’s still going to feel like an end of an era for both Game of Thrones and perhaps even TV in general when the final season hits our screens in April next year.
