Ghostbusters 3 Is Currently Being Written, Original Cast May Return

After Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters failed to make as much of an impression at the box office as it did with angry online commenters, the chances of a sequel were quickly snuffed out for better or worse. But while we probably won’t be seeing Melissa McCarthy and the team back on our screens again, Dan Aykroyd recently teased that the classic line-up could be making a return for the long-awaited Ghostbusters 3.

A third installment in the original series is an idea that’s been struggling to make the jump to screens for many years now, with Bill Murray seeming to go back and forth on the project. But when Aykroyd appeared on The Big Interview with Dan Rather, the star indicated that things might finally be moving forward with the threequel.

“There is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters,” said Aykroyd. “It’s being written right now.”

Should the old Ghostbusters be reuniting, they’ll be doing so minus one of their founding members, with Harold Ramis passing away back in 2014. With that in mind, the presence of Murray seems to be a deciding factor on whether this idea will ever make it out of the starting gate, though Aykroyd remains optimistic that he’ll come around in the end:

“I think Billy will come. The story’s so good. Even if he plays a ghost.”

Should Ghostbusters 3 actually make it to theaters, that would arguably serve as the final nail in the coffin for the Paul Feig era, as much as the director would apparently love to continue with the series. But while this may come as slightly disappointing news to anyone who feels that the 2016 Ghostbusters got a bum rap, it’s clear that there are plenty of fans out there who wouldn’t say no to a third round with the original gang.
