King James I Doctor Who

Alan Cumming May Return As King James I In Doctor Who

Last night's episode of Doctor Who wasn't exactly season 11's finest hour. Then again, when you've got outings like "Rosa" and "Demons of the Punjab" already in the books, there's certainly some tough competition out there. Nevertheless, "The Witchfinders" was harmless television and enjoyable enough, despite its shortcomings. If there was one definite highlight, though, it had to be Alan Cumming.

The beloved actor guest starred as King James I, and while he and the Doctor may not have parted ways on the friendliest of terms, we wouldn’t rule out an appearance from the character in a future episode. Given how well fans seem to have taken to him, the showrunners would be foolish not to bring King James I back, while Cumming himself has also hinted at such a thing happening, saying in March that he might return again to reprise the role.

Whether that’ll happen this season or not, we don’t know, but with only a handful of episodes to go, we imagine any future sightings of King James I would have to come next year. Or perhaps even the year after that. Regardless, we’d certainly be all for seeing Cumming turn up again.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we’ve got “It Takes You Away” to look forward to, which airs this Sunday and will find the Doctor and her TARDIS team in Norway and back in present day, with the synopsis teasing the following:

On the edge of a Norwegian fjord, in the present day, The Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz discover a boarded-up cottage and a girl named Hanne in need of their help. What has happened here? What monster lurks in the woods around the cottage – and beyond?

Sounds like an exciting hour, and you can catch Doctor Who when it returns to our screens on Sunday, December 2nd.
