M. Night Shyamalan Explains Why He Won’t Make A Glass Sequel

In a year full of superhero movies, next January’s Glass offers a different, sideways take on the comic book team-up film. Uniting Bruce Willis’ David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass from 2000’s Unbreakable with James McAvoy’s The Beast from 2017’s Split, the movie ends a loose trilogy that director M. Night Shyamalan has been cooking up for almost twenty years now.

And it sounds like this really will be the end for these characters, as Shyamalan revealed to Digital Spy that he’s not planning a Glass 2 in any shape or form. That’s because he doesn’t want to keep offering his audiences the same old thing and intends to resume his usual tactic of making “original thrillers” once the story he began in Unbreakable is completed.

“I don’t want to relive stuff and I don’t want to be an opportunist, that’s not the relationship that I have with the audience, that I aspire to. My aspiration is they know they’re going to get an original thriller every single time. That’s where my tastes go, so I’m going to say no [to another movie] right now.”

While the quality of his films may have varied over the years, the director definitely delivers something different every time. There’s little to compare his most famous movie The Sixth Sense with, say, The Happening (you know, the one with Mark Wahlberg where the villain’s a slight breeze).

Split marked a real return to form for the filmmaker, though, and the shock twist that it was set in the same universe as Unbreakable – with Willis reprising his role as Dunn in the final moments – brought a lot of his old fans back to the fold. Coming off the back of all that excitement, Glass promises to be an exciting follow-up starring its three terrific leads as well as the likes of Sarah Paulson and Anya Taylor-Joy. And we’re hopeful it’ll shatter our expectations when it hits cinemas on January 18th, 2019.
