The U.S.S. Discovery returns to our area of space next month when the second season of Star Trek: Discovery hits CBS All Access. This time around, the show’s going to really embrace its roots and make use of the fact that it’s a prequel to The Original Series. Not only will the ship’s new captain be pulled from Trek‘s original pilot episode, but it’ll also feature a new incarnation of the one and only Mr. Spock.
With just over a month to go now before it arrives, CBS has dropped this new synopsis for season 2. Those keeping up with updates about Discovery‘s sophomore run will be familiar with the mentions of the strange red signals in the sky and the Red Angel that’s connected to them, but it’s interesting to see how the pieces fit together. What’s more, the synopsis teases an estranged relationship between Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her Vulcan adoptive brother Spock (Ethan Peck, stepping into Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto’s shoes).
“After answering a distress signal from the U.S.S. Enterprise, season two of Star Trek: Discovery finds the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery joining forces with Captain Christopher Pike on a new mission to investigate seven mysterious red signals and the appearance of an unknown being called the Red Angel. While the crew must work together to unravel their meaning and origin, Michael Burnham is forced to face her past with the return of her estranged brother, Spock.”
Meanwhile, Inhumans star Anson Mount is also joining the cast as Captain Christopher Pike, most well known as the commander of the Enterprise before James Tiberius Kirk. In contrast to the duplicitous Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) from season 1, we’ve been promised that Pike will be a beacon of hope for the team and help rebuild their camaraderie and faith in Starfleet.
As for Spock, his inclusion here might be controversial to some, but showrunner Alex Kurtzman has teased that season 2 will explore a key personal evolution for the character, explaining how he went from the more personable Spock we see in TOS‘ pilot “The Cage” to the much, more logical Spock we know and love.
All things considered, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 sounds like it’ll please longtime fans more than season 1 did, and you can check it out when it blasts off on January 17th on CBS All Access.
