Venom Co-Creator Defends The Film, Says It Delivered Everything It Was Supposed To

Venom co-creator Todd McFarlane has gone on record to defend Venom, a movie he believes delivered everything it was supposed to.

With Venom now available across Blu-ray and DVD (check out all the special features here), the comic book world has been given another opportunity to run the rule over Sony’s superhero oddity.

It is, without question, a big and bold introduction to the so-called Sony Universe of Marvel Characters, but it’s fair to say that critics were not too keen on Venom, its goofy humor, and the at-times shoddy CGI. Nevertheless, if there’s one person who is willing to defend Sony’s lucrative feature, it’s Todd McFarlane, who knows a thing or two about the Sinister Symbiote having created him alongside David Michelinie all those years ago.

Indeed, while chatting to Yahoo! to celebrate Venom‘s Blu-ray release, the comic book scribe claimed that the movie “delivered everything it was supposed to.”

This thing delivered everything it was supposed to. It was gnarly, it was nasty, it had a big cool Venom, which was what I was looking for. [That] was my bias — I just wanted to see the visualness of Venom that I had created 30 years prior. I didn’t think that Spider-Man 3 did that right.

McFarlane didn’t stop there, either; he also went on to suggest that Venom‘s review consensus can largely be attributed to older critics unwilling to get on the film’s level, so to speak. That’s subject to debate, of course, but here’s what one of Eddie Brock’s founding fathers had to say about the situation:

It was a big roller-coaster ride. Visually, everything was coming at you. I think at times… the critics get it wrong in that they forget their age. They come in, and they’re 42 years old, and they come in with their attitude and they’re going, ‘Stop it.’ What if you were 16/15 and you were watching this movie? You would love it.

At $854 million and counting, Venom 2.0 is nigh on certain. The question, really, is whether Sony’s creative team are building towards a Sinister Six movie, or if they’re saving space for a certain Wall-Crawler to swing into the action…
