After close to 10 years of AMC’s The Walking Dead, we’ve been forced to say goodbye Lori, Carl and, more recently, the irreplaceable Rick Grimes, who will soon headline his own movie trilogy as part of the network’s ongoing expansion of the Walking Dead universe.

When it comes to Carl, in particular, actor Chandler Riggs was recently in attendance at the San Jose Fan Fest (h/t ComicBook.com), and opened up about his TV death. Indeed, Riggs believes that his on-screen character kicked the bucket at a pivotal moment in The Walking Dead‘s saga, given it arrived soon after a heartfelt farewell to his father Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Black Panther‘s Danai Gurira).

It wasn’t just Carl dying, it was also me leaving the show and kind of moving on to other things. So in many ways it was pretty symbolic just for the cast and crew, just for me to be leaving the show in the first place, it was a pretty big deal for all of us. And yeah, it sucked, and it was many long days, but I’m really happy with how it turned out and I’m really happy with my performances and I’m happy with how I left the show.

Now that he’s sitting on the sidelines, though, Chandler Riggs continues to enjoy The Walking Dead as a fan, though admits it took a little time to adjust following his heart-wrenching death mid-way through season 8.

It was kind of weird at first, not really knowing what’s gonna happen. But I kind of like it because it’s interesting not knowing what’s gonna happen every week and kind of being in it with you guys, it’s kind of fun and speculating and guessing on what’s gonna happen, it’s a lot of fun. It’s cool, I like it.

Looking to the future, and The Walking Dead‘s ninth season returns next month, by which point viewers will be able to gain a better understanding of the Whisperers and their wicked ways.
