If the various trailers for Captain Marvel are anything to go by, Nick Fury will strike up quite a rapport with the film’s titular heroine, making it only natural that Carol Danvers would leave her friend with a beeper should he ever need her assistance. What’s less clear, however, is why exactly the future Avengers assembler would be so reluctant to contact the MCU’s most powerful hero over the years, waiting only until his final moments in Avengers: Infinity War to send her a distress call.
The question was posed to producer Jonathan Schwartz in an interview with ComicBook.com, who hinted that Carol Danvers’ solo debut will offer some clarification.
“I think it’s a combination of things,” Schwartz said. “I think we will understand over the course of these movies why Fury makes the decisions that he does. He’s always a mysterious guy, and he always has his own reasons, but hopefully, we can clarify some of that for the audience.”
Fury’s refusal to contact Carol through all desperate situations that preceded Infinity War has spawned plenty of theories, but whatever the reason for the pair losing contact over the years, Nick’s eleventh-hour page ensures that Captain Marvel will be meeting up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Endgame.
What exactly Carol will be doing in the Infinity War sequel remains a mystery in itself, with the character keeping absent from all the Endgame footage we’ve seen so far, but it’s clear that she has a major part to play in cleaning up the mess left by Thanos last year.
While Endgame looks to serve as a changing of the guard between various Phase 1 Avengers and newcomers like Carol, Captain Marvel’s first solo outing is also notable for preceding the arrival of the likes of Iron Man and Hulk in the timeline. With that in mind, there’s been a fair amount of speculation on how Carol’s story might lead into later events in the MCU, but all will be revealed when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
