Disney’s recent trend of remaking their most cherished animated works is showing no sign of slowing down, and with Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall set to reimagine The Little Mermaid, a few actresses have been all too happy to throw their hat in the ring for the lead role of Ariel.
Among the first to express an interest was Lindsay Lohan, who took to Instagram back in 2017 to declare that she “will sing again” as the mermaid princess. And in a recent interview with variety, the Mean Girls star suggested that her enthusiasm for the gig hasn’t flagged, explaining that she’s a longtime fan of the 1989 original.
“The Little Mermaid is my favorite movie since I was a kid,” Lohan said. “Whenever I put that move on, it makes me happy. I’m like, ‘Everybody, stop. Watch this movie.’”
When asked if Disney had reached out to her about the project, Lohan admitted that it hadn’t happened yet, but she plans to do something about it.
“No, but I’m going to harass my agent about it after this.”
One potential stumbling block for landing the role is Lohan’s troubled past, which the actress claims has made it harder for her to find work in Hollywood. Nonetheless, the star has hopes that her new show Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club will help boost her reputation.
“I think there’s a misconception that people still have about me, and I think it’s unfortunate,” Lohan said. “Hopefully, this will change people’s perception once and for all.”
If Lindsay really wants to be the new Ariel, then she’ll have to beat out a lot of competition. Spider-Man: Far From Home star Zendaya, for instance, has long been rumored to be on Disney’s radar, and the actress herself seems game for the role.
In any case, with no release date set for The Little Mermaid, it could be a long wait before we see any actress rock the famous red hair. But in the meantime, Disney’s schedule is busy enough already, with Dumbo headed for theaters on March 29th, 2019, followed by Aladdin on May 24th, and The Lion King on July 19th.
