Suicide Squad 2 Gets A New Title And Release Date

Warner Bros. has handed Suicide Squad 2 a new title and release date tonight, revealing that it'll arrive in the summer of 2021.

Late last year, the internet was rocked when it was announced that James Gunn had been brought on board to write and possibly helm Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad 2, having previously been fired from his job directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Not only that, but a subsequent report suggested that the flick won’t be a proper sequel to David Ayer’s film, and may or may not be a complete reboot.

Unfortunately, we still haven’t heard confirmation on that last one, but a new announcement by WB has certainly begun to fuel speculation that they are indeed wiping the slate clean. Earlier tonight, the studio revealed that the sequel will hit theaters on August 6th, 2021 and it’s also got a new title: The Suicide Squad.

What’s peculiar about that is that it’s nearly identical to the title of the first film and with no number in there, it looks as if they’re hoping to just start fresh with the property and completely ignore the events of the 2016 effort. That’s just some speculation on our part, but the choice of title is certainly odd.

In any case, having Gunn on board really seems all too perfect seeing how Suicide Squad was widely interpreted as the DCEU’s answer to Guardians of the Galaxy. And given that it didn’t receive a great reception, many fans are hoping that Gunn will be able to reinvent the saga as the product of his own vision.

Unfortunately, Warner Bros. didn’t announce any casting or plot details, so we’re still uncertain of which direction they’re headed in here, but some kind of semi or full reboot is starting to look pretty plausible. In any case, we’ll let you know when we hear more about The Suicide Squad, but in the meantime, feel free to take to the comments section down below and let us know what you’d like to see Gunn do with the movie.
