Jazzed as I am to see a Birds of Prey movie finally coming to fruition, I’m still getting used to the idea of Harley Quinn being a part of that particular super group. On the plus side, though, she’s bringing Huntress and Black Canary along for the ride, so that’ll satisfy me as a comic book reader.
In fact, if I’m to associate the Clown Princess of Crime with any clique, it’s that of the Gotham City Sirens. For those unfamiliar, there was once a comic series of the same title focusing on the exploits of Harley, Catwoman and Poison Ivy. In other words, it united some of the most iconic bad girls under DC’s umbrella.
As you may remember, a Gotham City Sirens flick directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad) had been planned at one time, but that project lost steam long ago. Still, that doesn’t mean an adaptation of the material won’t happen at some point down the line.
Speaking of which, The Hollywood Reporter just published a piece on Batman villains we may soon see on the silver screen, and they just so happened to drop this little nugget:
“And with Birds of Prey rumored to lead to a trilogy comprised of Gotham City Sirens and Birds vs. Sirens features, Catwoman certainly won’t be kept off screen for long.”
Rumors of a such a trilogy have been making their rounds for a few weeks now, but if a major industry trade is willing to acknowledge something such as this, it probably does have weight to it. Just to speculate, Harley could feature in all three films, with her being forced to choose a side in the eventual crossover.
Getting back to the idea of Gotham City Sirens, that could prove to be the wild card in this situation. Either the studio could get Ayer’s project off the ground, or bring in someone new to craft the second part in an overarching narrative. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, to be honest. All I ask is that Catwoman actually be given a costume that’s accurate to the source material.
