The Captain America shield remains one of the definitive symbols of the MCU, making it less than surprising that the prop is set to return in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame after a period of absence.

Back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, we learned that Steve Rogers’ Vibranium shield came courtesy of Howard Stark, but after Cap’s clash with Howard’s son Tony in Captain America: Civil War, the prop came back under the ownership of the Starks. Consequently, when the universe was under threat in Avengers: Infinity War, Steve was left without his trademark accessory. This prompted Wakanda to provide a replacement, hence the oft-quoted “get this man a shield” line from the trailers.

Anyway, in the new Endgame TV spot released last night during the Super Bowl, we see that Cap is once more using his old shield. This suggests that either he and Iron have made amends, or the item was taken from the Stark residence without Tony’s permission.

But regardless of the context, it seems that the Marvel Phase 3 finale will indeed be including the familiar shield, which is only right seeing how this might well be Steve’s last major outing in the MCU. Granted, nothing has been confirmed yet, but for the last year, Captain America has been right up there with Iron Man among the heroes most frequently predicted to be ending their run with Endgame. And while co-director Joe Russo has said himself that Chris Evans is “not done yet” with the franchise, there’s reason to believe that he was actually referring to some directing gigs for the actor.

Regardless, we’ll find out if Cap can put his shield to some use when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
