As the first Marvel Studios release of the year, it isn’t too surprising to see that Captain Marvel is being given a hard push at the moment, with the film arriving in roughly a month. And following a brand new TV spot that dropped during the Super Bowl, we now have yet another new promo for Marvel’s first female-fronted standalone movie, which carries with it the burden of a 10-year legacy of premier superhero content.
That places the onus on Carol Danvers’ shoulders to continue the studio’s hot streak, and at least based on this appetizing slice of footage, it certainly looks like Captain Marvel will deliver – it may not be “one of the best films ever made,” but it’ll be a success nonetheless. You can check out the latest promo up above and judge for yourself, but it’s without a doubt a tantalizing tease of the MCU’s next release.
Much of the focus in this latest spot is on the dynamic between Carol and Nick Fury, with the latter poking fun at her outfit in a rather humorous moment. In fact, co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have previously compared the relationship between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson’s characters to the playful pair-ups of buddy movies like 48 Hrs. and Lethal Weapon, though if the two of them have such a good relationship, then you have to wonder why they fell out of touch for so many years.
We’ll likely get an answer to that question pretty soon, but in the meantime, we’re happy to tell you that reactions to early test screenings so far look to be overwhelmingly positive, with viewers walking away feeling very enthusiastic. Such praise has only added to the considerable levels of hype behind the pic, which managed to rank pretty high in the ‘Most Anticipated Films of 2019’ lists of quite a few polls and publications.
Early projections, meanwhile, predict a whopping domestic gross of $160 million in its first three days, which would mean that Captain Marvel will end up beating out the likes of MCU heavy hitters such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok over the same period. But even if it doesn’t quite reach those heights, it’s still looking like Marvel’s sitting on another smash hit that’ll no doubt be one of the most buzzed about films this year.
