The Search Is On For Lost Footage From Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers isn’t exactly considered a franchise high point by fans or critics, with the feature coming out to lousy reviews and earning the lowest global box office gross of any Halloween film to date. But like every entry in the long-running slasher saga, the 1989 flick has its defenders, and even those who don’t care for the movie may be interested to find out what Compass International Pictures and Trancas International Films unearth from its production.

The official Halloween Twitter account has announced that the search is underway for “lost” footage from The Revenge of Michael Myers, be it uncut kill scenes or the unused “Dr. Death” opening. To elaborate on the latter, the finished cut of Halloween 5 begins with a severely wounded Michael Myers washing up at the home of a hermit and falling into a coma on October 31st, 1988. Over the course of the next year, the hermit nurses his guest back to health, and on October 30th, 1989, Michael wakes up and kills the hermit, before returning to Haddonfield to find his niece Jamie Lloyd.

In the opening sequence that was originally shot, however, Michael instead stumbled upon the home of a sinister figure named Dr. Death, whose shack was filled with runes and tablets. After bringing Michael back to life through occult means, it’s said that Dr. Death suffered more or less the same fate as the hermit who replaced him in the theatrical cut.

Now it seems that the studio is hoping to rediscover the lost opening, and while this sequence may not fix every issue with Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, it’ll at least ensure that the later, cult-related developments in Michael’s story aren’t quite so out of the blue.
