Magneto Returns In New X-Men: Dark Phoenix Footage

Michael Fassbender is back as Magneto - complete with his iconic helmet - in this new footage from Fox's X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is finally set to arrive this summer, after several delays, and though we’ve come to expect a greater focus on Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey, for obvious reasons, there’ll still be plenty to keep fans of the likes of Professor X, Mystique, Quicksilver et al happy as well.

Speaking of which, while we didn’t see too much of him in the first trailer, the official X-Men Movies Twitter account has now teased the return of Michael Fassbender as Magneto. Seen below is a few quick seconds of the iconic character trying on his helmet, perhaps in preparation for a battle of some kind.

The last time we saw the master of magnetism in X-Men: Apocalypse, he turned against the titular mutant villain after almost destroying the world as one of his Four Horsemen. In Dark Phoenix, Erik will have retired to start his own mutant community, Genosha. Once Jean starts getting her Phoenix on, though, it looks like he’ll reclaim his helmet and become Magneto once again. But will it be to stop her? Or to encourage her, like he did in X-Men: The Last Stand?

We’ll have to wait and see on that, but it’s been all but confirmed that DP will probably be the last mainline entry in Fox’s franchise before Disney hoovers up the studio and Marvel gets the rights back to the Children of the Atom. When that happens, we’re assuming there’ll be some major recasting going on, which means this will probably be the last time we see the actor in the role.

We’ve been teased that one of the main characters is going to meet their end in the film as welland the identity of the ill-fated mutant may have even leaked out ahead of time.
