He’s the creative genius behind Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and the high-octane thriller Baby Driver, but for his next outing behind the camera, writer-director Edgar Wright is heading into dark and dangerous waters – specifically, he’s set to tackle psychological horror with Last Night In Soho.

Said to be inspired by Don’t Look Now and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion, the film will take place in central London – presumably in the present day – and though details are scarce at the moment, we know that Wright will begin shooting this summer from a screenplay co-written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who you may be familiar with from Penny Dreadful. Oh, and it’ll feature Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role, too.

But that’s not all, as Variety is telling us that Doctor Who alum Matt Smith has also boarded the project in an undisclosed role, as has Leave No Trace star Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie. And just like that, Edgar Wright’s next movie is beginning to fall into place.

Though the British filmmaker was apparently mulling over a direct sequel to Baby Driver, the music-propelled actioner which was one of the very best movies of 2017, he ultimately decided to go with Last Night in Soho instead. Speaking about the project a while back, Wright explained that he wanted to make a film about Central London, where he’s spent a lot of time.

I realized I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.

Wright will be working in tandem with Focus and Working Title to get Last Night in Soho in front of the cameras later this year – presumably ahead of a theatrical release in 2020 – and as soon as we learn more about what the plot may entail, or which other stars he’s managed to rope in, we’ll be sure to let you know.
