Captain Marvel is touching down in theaters next week with a whole load of buzz behind it, but given that this is the internet and all, it only makes sense that Carol Danvers’ solo debut has also found itself with a bit of controversy swirling around it.
As you’ve surely heard by now, the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page has been flooded with negative comments lately in an attempt to tank its audience approval score. This is nothing new, of course, as Black Panther found itself in a similar position last year. Then again, anyone who remembers the box office figures of Ryan Coogler’s effort can tell you that these trolls didn’t do much to harm its performance, and with Captain Marvel currently eyeing a $100 million-plus domestic opening, we can safely say that the studio has nothing to worry about here.
Nevertheless, Rotten Tomatoes is now fighting back against the trolls by disabling user reviews for the film. This appears to be a site-wide change, too, and applies to all unreleased movies. Frankly, it’s something that should’ve been done ages ago, but it’s nice to see that the outlet’s finally standing up and making the change.
That being said, it’s unlikely that this will do much to stop the continuing stream of online negativity being aimed at Captain Marvel right now. Thankfully, though, the Brie Larson-led flick has so far received a glowing response from those who’ve already seen it, and according to Fandango, it’s also passed the likes of Wonder Woman and Aquaman in pre-sales.
In other words, things are looking pretty promising for Captain Marvel, though the real test will arrive when the film hits theaters on March 8th. After that, you can see Carol again later this year on April 26th, when she meets Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Endgame.
