Respawn Will Overhaul Hitboxes With Apex Legends Season 1 Update

During a Reddit AMA, developer Respawn outlined the changes coming to Hitboxes as part of the Apex Legends season 1 update.

Such is the blistering success of Apex Legends that it’s almost easy to forget just how new Respawn’s über-popular shooter really is – it booted online February 4th, for crying out loud, and has already amassed a userbase of 50 million players.

But Respawn Entertainment clearly has no intention of resting on their laurels, as earlier this week, the developer took to Reddit to outline the many changes coming as part of the Apex Legends Season 1 update.

It’s a question of balance really, as Respawn is conscious of releasing too many updates in quick succession and disrupting the flow of its million-dollar baby – here’s looking at you, Fortnite. Via Reddit, Community manager Jay ‘Jayfresh’ Frechette addressed the Hitbox size reductions and optimizations for Caustic, Pathfinder and Gibraltar:

  • We’re better sizing hitboxes to character gear & model
  • Since these adjustments have a MAJOR impact on the game, we want to make sure there aren’t any major bugs, so we didn’t want to rush them out
  • If these adjustments prove to be insufficient, we’ll consider additional adjustments during Season 1

Respawn has clearly acknowledged player feedback when developing its latest Apex Legends update, as previously Caustic, Pathfinder and Gibraltar were prone to higher damage due to their unwieldy hitboxes – but no more. While the studio is yet to outline a specific release window for this patch (next week appears to be the likely ETA), players can take solace in the fact that Caustic, Pathfinder and Gibraltar won’t be so vulnerable once season 1 is live.

Via Reddit:

We’re also considering a range of other changes such as natural damage reduction as well as individual kit power tweaks. Because many of these changes are significant, we want to make sure they are heavily tested before they go live, in the event they are necessary.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Apex Legends as it braces for the launch of Season 1, so stay tuned.
